EMBA HSG Alumni After Work Event with Prof. Dr. Simon Evenett

“We do not live in an era of free trade.”

“Never Let a Serious Crisis Go To Waste: Political and Corporate Opportunism” – with this very current and relevant topic, Prof. Dr. Simon Evenett captured the 70 participants of the event hosted by the EMBA HSG Alumni. Before the interesting talk, Prof. Dr. Karolin Frankenberger, Academic Director of the Executive MBA, addressed and informed the Alumni on the latest news and developments on campus, such as the cohorts of EMBA, IEMBA and emba X, the new university law and the continued strong focus of the HSG on economics.

Prof. Dr. Evenett lectures at the University of St. Gallen and coordinates the Global Trade Alert Initiative (GTA). By collecting and analyzing data regarding trade liberalization and the deep dive into questions on industrial politics during crisis times, he elaborated on Swiss- as well as global problems. In his talk, he underlines the importance of linking the front page with the business pages of newspapers. Many companies and governments work with non-transparent subsidies and create – through non-declaration – an advantage on the market.

In the following lively discussion with the EMBA- and IEMBA Alumni, Evenett answered questions on significant developments (“A crisis will come”). He gave a current example of subsidy policies by the French Minister of Finance and already predicted the economic crisis that the United Kingdom is facing right now.

Stefan Stübi, Co-President of the EMBA HSG Alumni, pointed out the upcoming event of the alumni associating, namely the Refresher for Digital Readiness on November 3rd / 4th, 2022. Then the ambiance of the Haus des Rüden in Zurich was used for further discussions, exchange of ideas and networking.
